Co-Occurring Disorders

co-occurring disorders treatmentLiving with the challenging symptoms of a mental health disorder can be overwhelming for teens and adolescents struggling with mental illness. Many teens turn to drugs or alcohol to self-medicate in an attempt to find relief from the struggles of their mental health condition. It’s common for teens diagnosed with a mental health issue to struggle with more than one disorder. This is referred to as a dual diagnosis or co-occurring disorders. A professional dual-diagnosis treatment center for adolescents is the best way to address these co-occurring disorders and give the best chance of a successful recovery.

Because alcohol and drugs are easily obtainable in American society, many adolescents will turn to mind-altering substances as a way of helping them control the symptoms of their mental health disorder. Unfortunately, the continued use of these substance(s) can exacerbate their mental health symptoms, leading to addiction issues and other serious consequences. When this occurs, treatment programs and rehab explicitly designed for teenagers become that much more crucial. Thankfully, Imagine Omaha’s dual diagnosis treatment program can help.

Why Co-Occurring Disorders Treatment Matters

At Imagine Omaha, our dual diagnosis treatment professionals are experienced in helping teens navigate complex issues. Some of the most common mental health disorders that adolescents and teens who abuse drugs or alcohol are diagnosed with include the following:

The professional staff of our dual diagnosis treatment center for adolescents begins by giving a comprehensive assessment. Through this evaluation, we can diagnose co-occurring disorders and develop an individualized treatment plan. The goal of treatment is to address both the mental health and substance use issues concurrently since one disorder tends to influence and reinforce the other.

What to Expect in Dual Diagnosis Treatment for Teens

At the core of our dual diagnosis treatment for teens is a partial hospitalization program for teens ages 12 through 18.

While not as intensive as an inpatient residential program, our partial hospitalization program (PHP) offers a level of care that provides teen patients with access to a structured and safe treatment environment that does not disrupt their daily life. This means that while in the adolescent co-occurring disorder treatment program at Imagine Omaha, teens may continue to do school work, work their part-time jobs, and sleep in their own beds at home.

While in our teen co-occurring disorder treatment program, many of those in our care start in PHP. This level of care can help patients build a foundation for lasting recovery. With this intensive care, we work tirelessly to help improve their mental and physical health and prepare them for the subsequent phases of the program.

Continued Progress in Our Dual Diagnosis Treatment Program

After completing their partial hospitalization program at Imagine Omaha, the adolescents in our care will step down to an intensive outpatient program (IOP) and participate in additional evidence-based treatments and therapies. Each step along this journey is designed to address not only a teenager’s disorders but also begin to instill in them the essential life skills, coping mechanisms, and critical techniques for dealing with trauma and triggers in a healthy way. Furthermore, our co-occurring disorder treatment program involves making plans for medication management, trauma-informed care, and support through aftercare.
